St. Augustine High School held its 65th commencement exercises on May 15, at the Xavier University of Louisiana Convocation Center. Kenneth A. St. Charles, Ph.D., ‘81, president and chief executive officer; the Very Reverend Michael L. Thompson, S.S.J., Superior General of the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart; and Sean J. Goodwin ‘95, principal presented awards and diplomas to the 121 graduates. 

St. Augustine alumni Honorable Sidney J. Barthelemy ’60, Bivian “Sonny” Lee III ’99, and PJ Morton ’99, served as commencement speakers and honored guests. 


The valedictorian, Marc A. Barnes Jr., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marc Barnes Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Xavier Angel of New Orleans. Barnes will attend the University of Notre Dame on a University of Notre Dame scholarship. A member of the National Honor Society, Barnes earned academic awards in English, math, science, social studies, and theology.  An award winning member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Barnes was also a member of the St. Augustine speech and debate, tennis, and golf teams.


Barnes also received St. Augustine’s highest honor the Purple Knight Award. The Purple Knight Award is presented to the senior who in the opinion of the faculty and staff best represents excellence in scholarship, leadership, character, service, and the spirit of cooperation.

Co-salutatorian Kyron C. Summers is the son of Chervonda Fortenbery of New Orleans. He will attend Xavier University of Louisiana in the fall where he will major in biology with an emphasis in pre-medicine, from which he received a Xavier University of Louisiana scholarship. A National Honor Society member, he was the recipient of academic awards in English, math, science, and social studies. 


A member of the Marching 100, Summers served as a drum major for the 2018-2019 year. Recognizing his outstanding St. Augustine musical career, Summers received the Edwin Harrell Hampton Award. The Hampton Award celebrates a student musician who exemplifies leadership through campus and community involvement exhibiting integrity, collaboration, and representing the character of a Marching 100 band member.


Tyler D. Wilson, co-salutatorian, is the son of Andre’ L. Wilson Sr., and Ira Wilson of Gretna. Wilson will attend the University of Notre Dame on a University of Notre Dame scholarship as an engineering major. A member of the National Honor Society he earned academic awards in English, math, and science. Wilson was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, film and media, and the speech and debate teams. 

The St. Joseph Award honoring a senior who best represents the model of humility and service reflecting St. Joseph’s resolve to be faithful to God, active in the community, and supportive of others went to Christopher R. Confident. 

The Citizenship Award, presented to a senior who has demonstrated the ability to combine the spirit of cooperation and academic achievement, with the principles associated with being an ethical and moral student was presented to Rion J. Sam.

The Community Service Award honors a senior who has made significant contributions to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication to service. In the past school year the honoree, Christopher R. Confident, completed 435 service hours proving that he is a role model for compassion and service.  

The Marching 100 Award for the student musician who best exemplifies the qualities of a Purple Knight and dedication to musical achievement went to Ezekiel D. Joseph.
