St. Augustine celebrates its 64th Commencement

Class of 2018

The Class of 2018 celebrated its commencement

 on May 16, at the Xavier University of Louisiana Convocation Center. The convocation center was filled with the 106 graduates, their parents and other family members, St. Augustine’s faculty and staff, and members of the Jubilarian Class of 1968 and the Silver Class of 1993. A member of the class of 1968, Wayne Neveu, was one of the commencement speakers along with Avery Johnson ’83, and the Honorable Benedict J. Willard ’82.

Kenneth A. St. Charles, Ph.D., ‘81, president and chief executive officer; the Very Reverend Michael L. Thompson, S.S.J., Superior General of the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart; and Sean J. Goodwin ‘95, principal presented awards and diplomas to the 106 graduates.

Andre Wilson


Andre’ L. Wilson Jr.,
son of Andre’ L. Wilson Sr., and Ira Wilson of Gretna was the valedictorian. Wilson will attend the University of Notre Dame on a University of Notre Dame scholarship. Earning the American Association of Blacks in Energy and Percy Pierre Engineering Scholarships he plans to study engineering in the fall. A member of the National Honor Society, Wilson earned academic awards in English, math, science, history, and theology.  President of the St. Augustine student body, Wilson was also a member of the St. Augustine film crew, speech and debate team, track and field, varsity football serving as a defensive assistant, journalism club, and the Junior Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. 

 

 

Gregory Lucien Jr

Co-s
alutatorian Gregory J. Lucien Jr., is the son of the Gregory Lucien Sr., and Talana Suarez of New Orleans. He will attend Xavier University of Louisiana in the fall where he will major in psychology from which he received a Xavier University of Louisiana scholarship. The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, recently named Lucien Outstanding Minority Youth. A National Honor Society member, he was the recipient of academic awards in English, science, history, and theology.

 

 

Juan Monjarres


Juan A. Monjarres,
co-salutatorian, is the son of Carolina Ivett Bailey and Daniel Monjarres of New Orleans. Monjarres will attend Tulane University on a Tulane University scholarship as a chemical engineering major. A member of the National Honor Society he earned academic awards in English, math, science, history and theology.  He was a four-year athlete in football earning a place on the LHSAA Academic All-State Football Composite team. A St. Augustine track and field team member, Monjarres medaled in track at the Junior Olympic Games.

 


Kyle Jackson


Kyle A. Jackson
son of Jacque Jackson Sr., and Connie Jackson of LaPlace received St. Augustine’s highest honor the Purple Knight Award. The Purple Knight Award is presented to the senior who in the opinion of the faculty best represents excellence in scholarship, leadership, character, service, and the spirit of cooperation. In the fall Jackson will major in engineering at Florida A&M University, from which he earned a Florida A&M University scholarship. A four-year football athlete, Jackson was named a WWL A+ Athlete and a Turk’s Sports Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was also a member of the St. Augustine tennis, baseball, and track and field teams. At St Augustine Jackson was the senior class president, a member of the National Honor Society and film crew.


Special awards

The St. Joseph Award honoring a senior who best represents the model of humility and service reflecting St. Joseph’s resolve to be faithful to God, active in the community, and supportive of others went to Lionel Johnson, Jr.


The Citizenship Award, presented to a senior who has demonstrated the ability to combine the spirit of cooperation and academic achievement, with the principles associated with being an ethical and moral student was presented to Wardell Royal, III.

The Community Service Award honors a senior who has made significant contributions to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication to service. In the past school year the honoree, Emonte´ Wilson, completed 435 service hours proving that he is a role model for compassion and service. 


The Edwin Harrell Hampton Award recognizing a student musician who exemplifies leadership through campus and community involvement exhibiting integrity, collaboration, and representing the character of a Marching 100 band member went to Jean-Paul Willard.


The Marching 100 Award for the student musician who best exemplifies the qualities of a Purple Knight and dedication to musical achievement went to Dorian Jones.
