Celebrating St. Augustine High School’s 61st Commencement Exercises

St. Augustine High School held its 61st commencement exercises May 20 
Sunshine replaced the previous day’s rain clouds, and a beautiful tradition continued. The Class of 2015 was presented before family, friends, faculty, and staff during graduation on the Xavier Campus on Wednesday, May 20. The diplomas were conferred by Oyd Craddock, President and Chief Executive Officer; the Very Reverend William Norvel, S.S.J., Superior General of the St. Joseph Society; and Sean J. Goodwin, Principal. Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and the executive editor of The New York Times, Dean Baquet was the guest speaker.

Dean Baquet, a New Orleans native who is executive editor of The New York Times,  spoke about his life and offered his advice to the class of 2015. He reflected back on his experiences at school, the power of listening, the importance of truth in storytelling and the value of expanding horizons through travel.

Baquet, who grew up in the Treme neighborhood, graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1974 and got his start in journalism covering the police beat as a reporter for the States-Item in New Orleans. He went on to work for The Times-Picayune and the Chicago Tribune before joining The Times’ newsroom as an editor. In 2014 he went on to become The Times’ first African-American executive editor.


Joseph Charles Laurent delivered the valedictory address at the 2015 graduation ceremony.

Valedictorian Joseph Charles Laurent, son of Joseph and Chalita Laurent, earned academic awards in English, Mathematics and Science. He also earned Xavier University of Louisiana and Howard University Legacy scholarships, and a TOPS Award. A National Honor Society member, Laurent will attend Howard University in the fall and major in sports medicine. Laurent earned Superior Achievement Honor Roll status and served as a member of several organizations and clubs including the Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council and the Purple Knights Basketball team.

Salutatorian, Jerry Brown IV son of Lt. Commander Jerry Brown, III, and Arlette Winder Brown, earned the Burger King Scholars Award, the Fisk University Erastus Milo Cravath Presidential Scholarship and the Samford Deans Scholarship. Other scholarships and awards include Loyola University of New Orleans, Morehouse College, Tuskegee University, University of Iowa Advantage Award, University of Iowa National Scholars Award and Xavier University of Louisiana President’s Scholarship. A National Honor Society member, Brown earned the Social Studies award and plans to attend Fisk University and major in Biology/Pre-Medical in the fall. Brown earned Superior Achievement Honor Roll status and served as a member of several organizations and clubs including the Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council and the Purple Knights Football and baseball teams.

Salutatorian, Tyler Charles Sanders son of Theodore and Charlene Sanders, earned a Howard University Legacy Scholarship and the Samford Dean’s Scholarship. Other scholarships and awards include the Spring Hill Gautrelet Award, Spring Hill National Alumni Association Board, TOPS Award, Tuskegee University, University of Louisiana and Xavier University of Louisiana. A National Honor Society member, Sanders plans to attend Howard University and major in pharmacy. Sanders earned Superior Achievement Honor Roll status and served as a member of several organizations and clubs including the Future Business Leaders of America and the International Club.

Tre’ Jamal Dawson earned the Purple Knight Award, the school’s highest award to a graduate. This award is given to the student who, in the judgment of the entire faculty, best combines excellence in the following areas: scholarship, participation in school activities, character, personality and a spirit of cooperation.

Charles Edward Brown III earned the Citizenship Award. The award for Citizenship is given to the student who, in the judgment of the entire faculty, exemplifies the spirit of cooperation and participation.
