Jones Named Head Football Coach
NEW ORLEANS – After a thorough search and interview process, administrators at St. Augustine High School select current Assistant Principal Al Jones as the new head football coach.
Jones, a 1975 graduate of St. Aug, has over 30 years of experience in education, educational leadership and coaching. He will be making his second stint on the sideline for the Purple Knights. Jones was a defensive coordinator from 1981-86 before leaving for a teaching position at Frederick Douglass High School where he later became head football coach from 1994-1999. Jones’ coaching career boasts several district championships, playoff appearances and Coach of the Year awards.
Jones also played Defensive End for the Purple Knights earning All-District, All-City, All-South and All-American honors. He went on to play football at Tulane University where he was named team captain and his degree in Physical Education. Jones holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Xavier University, as well.
Principal Sean Goodwin said of Jones, “He understands the history of St. Augustine football and where it needs to go. I trust him like no other to get the job done. He’s what we need at this time.”
“To be able to come back and serve in this position is an honor,” Jones said. Adding, that he will let his philosophy of “teaching a young man how to be successful on the football field will help him be successful in life” as a guiding principle for how he runs his program.
Jones’ head coaching duties start effective immediately. He will also continue his role as assistant principal for the remainder of the year. Jones will start the 2015-16 school year as the Director of Student Support & Services. A new assistant principal will be hired to fill the vacancy.
